1. What is the Sexton?

The sexton is the official in charge of day-to-day cemetery administration and maintenance.

2. What is a traditional burial?

A traditional burial is a burial in which the deceased is placed in a casket and holding vault. Once the body is placed in a casket it is then placed in an outer container which is generally made of concrete.

3. Are burial spaces available to purchase?

Yes, Kohlerlawn Cemetery has lots and spaces available for sale. The original side (Eastside) of the cemetery has many spaces available. Areas on the Eastside and the Westside of the original section of the cemetery were originally left open for walkways.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s the walkway spaces were made available for sale. In 2002 Kohlerlawn opened a new one-acre section that also has spaces for sale.

4. What is a space?

All spaces are 4 by 12 feet. The total number of spaces in a lot varies depending on the location. Generally there are 6 to 8 spaces per lot.

5. What is a lot?

A lot is a section of ground made up of more than one gravesite space.

6. What is a double depth grave space?

A double depth grave space refers to a gravesite that is dug 9 feet for the first interment. The second interment is placed directly above the first at a depth of 6 feet.

7. What is a cremation?

Cremation refers to the act of consuming the deceased by fire.

8. What is a cremation space?

A cremation space is designated for the sole purpose of the burial of cremains. A cremation space is half the size of a full space and only up to two cremations can be interred.

9. How many cremations do you allow on a single full space? Is an outer container required?

Up to five cremations are allowed on one full space. No outer container is required with the burial of cremations at this time.

10. What is a mausoleum?

A mausoleum is a tomblike structure or building for the burial of dead bodies.

11. What is a columbarium?

A columbarium is a structure that contains niches for the placement of cinerary urns, e.g. urns with cremains.

12. How deep is a traditional grave dug?

The sexton sets the depth of the traditional grave. A traditional burial is generally the depth of 6 feet at the base of the grave.

13. How deep is a cremation grave dug?

The sexton sets the depth of the cremation grave. A cremation grave is usually the depth of 2 and a half feet. If the cremains are placed on an existing gravesite it will be placed on top of the outer container.
