1. What are the rules for children using the facility? Are they monitored to make sure they are using the facility properly?

The Harward Recreation Center (HRC) prides itself on being a "family facility" and we encourage all family members to engage in healthy activities. For the safety of our patrons, we ask that adults directly supervise children under 12 while they use cardio equipment or the indoor track. HRC staff monitors all areas of the facility throughout the day, however, they cannot be everywhere at once. If you see inappropriate behavior or use of HRC equipment and amenities, please notify a staff member so they may remedy the situation.

2. Why doesn't the Rec Center offer towels to its members?

A towel service is a costly option that we've decided not to offer. With the funds saved from having members provide their own towels the Rec Center can spend this money on new equipment and better service.

3. Why doesn't the program desk have the same hours as the Rec Center front desk?

The Program Desk tries to accommodate most programs by staying open until 7 p.m. Unfortunately it is not cost effective for us to stay open until 10 p.m. like the Rec Center front desk.

There are other avenues of registration for customers to use when the program desk is closed. There is a drop-box located to the left of the program desk that allows registrations to be filled out and paid when the desk is closed. We open the box each morning and register all dropped forms first thing in the morning. Our website allows for registrations whenever it is convenient for you.

4. What is the cleaning schedule for the Rec Center?

Close to half a million people walking through our doors every year, and with that kind of traffic we need to devote a lot of resources to maintain our cleanliness. We have a custodial and maintenance staff of 13 employees who work starting at 3:30 a.m. until 1:30 a.m. the next day. They have regular cleaning checklists that encompass everything from washing windows to mopping floors.

Even with this large staff and long hours the Rec Center can have areas of heavy use that need more attention. Therefore to minimize the impact on our patrons, we close the entire facility for 4 days each year to address those needs. The closure occurs Thursday through Sunday after Labor Day in September.

Please help us by reporting any conditions you find that are not completely clean or in shape. We will gladly spend some extra time in taking care of a specific problem area.

5. Why are the weekend hours different from the weekday?

The Harward Recreation Center has held different hours over the weekend throughout its history. The Saturday and Sunday hours have been adjusted to accommodate the majority of our patrons needs while allowing for some time for staff training, cleaning, and building maintenance during the closed hours.
